17.2 Hints and solutions

When running Windows 95/98, it is strongly advised to use the shortcuts in the REBEL10 Windows Group. Click START and then go to the REBEL10 Group and run either -Rebel10- or -Rebel10 NO VESA- depending on your graphical adaptor card.

If you did not install the Rebel10 group during installation then run REBGROUP.EXE from your Rebel10 CD-ROM.

From experience we know that using one of these shortcuts solves most reported problems. Also, these shortcuts are optimized for the strongest settings.

17.2.1 MS-DOS Graphical problems (VESA)

Some (older) graphical adaptors are not fully VESA compatible. You can bypass REBEL's VESA mode by running REBEL with the "V" option. Example: REBEL.EXE V

17.2.2 MS-DOS Graphical problems (MODE)

Some graphical adaptors while running REBEL do give problems due to the MODE + EGA setting in your AUTOEXEC.BAT startup file. Since REBEL is a VGA-related application, on some PCs you must remove the following line from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

MODE CON CODEPAGE PREPARE=((850) C:\DOS\EGA.CPI)

and restart your PC again to activate the new setting.

17.2.3 Graphical problems (Matrox and Cirrus)

If you have an old version of the Matrox or Cirrus Logic graphical adaptor, the pull down menus in REBEL may be unreadable. You can fix this in the following way:

The Menu is now ok. Go again to the CONFIG menu and save the changes and problem is solved forever. Your Cirrus Logic or Matrox video card does not support a font of REBEL. So actually it's their bug we have to fix. Also you can find a bugfix for your Matrox card on the Internet at:

17.2.4 WINDOWS 95/98 Memory problems (64 MB)

On some PCs with 64 MB of memory while running from the DOS-prompt REBEL may report "Insufficient memory". Reason unknown. All we know is that it is HIMEM.SYS related. Solution: Use the shortcuts provided in the Windows REBEL10 group.

17.2.7 Windows 95/98 (F8 trick)

You have started REBEL 10.0 with the strongest settings. Rebel averages 5% faster because of the lack of Windows. This also allows Rebel to play with the biggest hash table possible. We believe it makes Rebel 5-10 ELO points stronger. In general we do not recommend this option because of the lack of user comfort, but finally it's up to you to decide on that.
