Our masters can beat Chess programs..?

IM Vaidas Sakalauskas/LTU/-last FIDE elo 2437. A member of a Lithuanian national team in chess Olympiads:Elista/1998/,Istanbul/2000/-with nice perfomance in Turkey. 7points from 12 playing permanently on 2 and 3d boards.

Played for Lithuania team in Europe championship in Batumi/1999/. Stabile prize places in Lithuanian individual championships. Prizes in international tournaments. Great help for our club team to become a Lithuanian club`s champion 2000. Vaidas has brought 100% points on his board!

His perfomance in our club`s match vs Rebel computers was nice surprise for us. He was the first player who had won REBEL-CENTURY program with clear win. The most interesting that his advantage in the match was clear from the opening.

It helped other players very much when they have understood Vaidas was wining. It was Gruenfeld -Vaidas favorite opening system and it is very interesting how our IM had beated program already in the opening theory.

I hope it is interesting example for all chessplayers and for programers as well to avoid such mistakes while playing the human master. For this reason as our Odyssey tournament is still warming up i have asked Vaidas Sakalauskas to remember a little history and to annotate his victory against strong program in a live show match.

Sakalauskas, Vaidas (2450) - REBEL-Century [D85]

REBEL-Baltijos Lyga club 1999

Sakalauskas

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. cxd5 Nxd5 5. Bd2!

Anticomputer`s move.I knew playing long and complicated theory lines against computer was hopeless.I needed "silent"position to start.

5... Nb6

After famous game Kortchnoj-Kasparov,Weik an Zee,2000 we can recommend:

6. Nf3 Nc6 7. Bf4 Bg7 8. e3 O-O 9. Be2 Bf5 10. O-O+/=

Whites have more comfortable game already and black must be worried about their configuration, how to develop their peaces in some logical way.It is already not so easy!

10... Qc8 11. Qc1 Rd8 12. Rd1 a6?! 13. h3!

PREVENTION /!/ moves.I understand here i will play e4 in a future and will get great space advantage, but first i want to prepare for it not in a hurry. Prevention and patienty is very important to learn for young players and for.. ..computers:)

13... Be6 14. b3!? Nb4?

Fatal mistake !!! Of course game was going slowly not by REBEL`s taste, but Nb4 was blind shot for sure.I still hardly believe how such solid program didn`t count the consequences of such doubtful move!

15. e4+/- f5 16. Be5!-> fxe4 17. Nxe4 Nc6 18. Bxg7 Kxg7 19. Nc5 Rd6 20. Ng5 Bg8?

After this move it is impossible to save a serious game. REBEL programers again have to explain how or why the program let me to play Bg4????

21. Bg4+- Qb8 22. Nge6+ Bxe6 23. Nxe6+ Kh8 24. Qh6?! Qg8 25. Nxc7 Rad8 26. Qe3 e6 27. Qf4!? Nd5 28. Nxd5 Rxd5 29. Bf3 Rxd4 30. Rxd4 Rxd4 31. Qf6+ Qg7 32. Qxe6 Qd7 33. Qxd7 Rxd7 34. Bxc6!+-

Simply and strong

34... bxc6 35. Rc1

Black have no pawn. Weakness in the queen`s flang:a6,c6.Fine game for a rook in a 5line.Also passing pawn in a king`s flang. This makes a result clear for me.Now it is all up to simply correct technique.Such game i must win vs any opponent. And REBEL can only hope for some terrible oopses from me. But such hopes havent realized.

35... Rc7 36. Rc5 Kg7 37. Ra5 Ra7 38. b4 Kf7 39. a3 Ke8 40. f4 Kd7 41. Kf2 Kc7 42. Kf3 Kb6 43. g4 Rd7 44. Ke4 Rd6 45. h4 Re6+ 46. Re5 Rd6 47. h5 Rd1 48. hxg6 hxg6 49. Rg5 Re1+ 50. Kd4 Rd1+ 51. Ke5 Rd5+ 52. Kf6 Rd4 53. Kxg6 Rxf4 54. Kh5 Rf3 55. Ra5 c5 56. Rxc5 Rxa3 57. g5 Rh3+ 58. Kg4 Rb3 59. Rc4 Kb5 60. Rf4 Rd3 61. g6 Rd8 62. Kg5 Rg8 63. Kh6 Rh8+ 64. Kg7 Rb8 65. Kh7

Typicall anticomputer`s game!White did not let the program to play it`s favorite open , tactical game, keeping good distance;taking space, playing calmly, quietly. As it happens-computer has made a mistake/Nb4/ and white has destroyed black position quickly with 15.e4,16.Be5. Strange why computer hasnt showed typicall to him persistent struggle trying to make any contragame or at least defeating his positions correctly .Such strange blunders instead like 20..... Bg8.....
