REBEL CENTURY 1.2 is a free update for Rebel Century users who have subscribed to the Rebel subscription area.

This version is for for computer-computer lovers in the first place. Expected elo performamce gain in the computer-computer area is at least 50 ELO points above REBEL-CENTURY and maybe even a lot more as our tests so far indicate.

This comp-comp engine is the result of the conclusions from the Chess in 2010 topic introduced by Rebel programmer Ed Schröder last year. The engine is based on Rebel 10c concept but is completely rewritten.

Characteristics of Rebel Century 1.2
  • 2.5 to 3 times faster than Rebel Century on short times controls.

  • On longer time controls version 1.2 typically hits 1.5 to 2 plies more than Rebel Century.

  • On longer time controls (40/2:00) on a fast PC (500 Mhz) version 1.2 typically hits 11-13 plies average.

New features

  • A stronger chess engine especially for comp-comp lovers.

  • Option FAST EVALUATION (makes Rebel 25% faster).

  • Option FAST SEARCH (this makes Rebel 20% faster).

  • Pressing SHIFT-F8 will turn off/on the log-file. Adding "L3" to the command-line will turn off the log-file by default.

  • Bugfix STRONGEST SETTINGS (reset default Personality).

  • Longer main variations.

Example

Last year this position was discussed endlessly in the public Computer Chess Club forum.

The goal of this position is to avoid the move 1.Bxa8? because it loses to the clever 1..Ng3+! It seems to be a hard position for most chess programs as the final loss is very deep.

Since Rebel Century 1.2 is about speed mainly here are the solution times of both versions.

Rebel Century 1.2 and tactics

A comparison was made between Rebel Century and the newer Rebel Century 1.2 concerning tactics. As a base a subset of the Encyclopedia of Chess Middle Games (ECM) was used. This subset contains only the 125 hardest positions of the original ECM set which contains over 850 positions. The subset can be downloaded

The test was done using Rebel's function "Analyze EPD" which returns a bench rating based on the well known LCT-II formula. Rebel Century as well as Rebel Century 1.2 were tested on 3 different time controls:
  • 1 minute per move.
  • 3 minutes per move.
  • 10 minutes per move.
Used hardware: Athlon 600 Mhz, 128 Mb.

Time Control Rebel Century Rebel Century 1.2
1 minute per move 3690 (67) 3930 (77)
3 minutes per move 3925 (82) 4050 (86)
10 minutes per move 3985 (95) 4165 (99)

The first number is the gained bench rating, the second number between brackets is the number of positions solved (maximum is 125).

Remarkable results

  • Version 1.2 scores even better (3930) on 1 minute per move as the original Rebel Century (3925) on 3 minutes per move! Its reason: version 1.2 typically finds the key-moves 3-4 times faster.

  • Version 1.2 scores clearly better (4050) on 3 minutes per move as the original Rebel Century (3985) on 10 minutes per move! Same reason: version 1.2 typically finds the key-moves 3-4 times faster.

  • Because version 1.2 is so much faster there is only 55 points difference between Rebel Century 10 minutes (3985) and Rebel Century 1.2 one minute (3930) which is amazing.
