2.1 System requirements

The following PC specifications are required:

80386-processor or higher, VGA-card and monitor, minimum 4 MB internal memory, a hard disk with at least 4 MB free space and of course a CD-ROM player.

The presence of a VGA-card which is VESA-compatible (most computers have nowadays) is highly recommended for it will influence the performance of the graphics positively. It will also allow you to change the colors of ALL items that are listed in the CoLoR menu. The lack of VESA-compatibility will cause some items to be connected to each other in case of changing colors; in this case you are also advised to deactivate the animation.

2.2 The installation

For installation you need the original CD-ROM.

In case of the upgrade version you also need the original copy of REBEL 8.0 or REBEL 9.0 as during the installation you will be prompted for that.

2.2.1 Starting the installation

• put the original REBEL CD-ROM in your computer's CD-drive;
• activate the drive (type for example "d:" + ENTER)
• type "install" + ENTER
• the screen will show you the default settings and will ask you for confirmation.
• if you answer with "Y" the program will start the installation.
• answering "N" allows you to change the settings.

2.2.2 Copy protection

To prevent our product from being copied by third parties, which is a criminal offence while the program is protected by copyright, the program is software-protected.

You have the possibility to install the program unlimited for personal use only from the original CD-ROM.

2.3 Files and directories

After installation

• REBEL.EXE the chess program
• REBEL.TRL the language file
• REBEL.GIF the welcome screen (picture)
• FRAGILE the pieces needed for the display of material differences
• BOOK.TRL the names of the book openings in available languages
• BOOK.TRX the corresponding moves with the BOOK.TRL file
• REBEL.ECO the corresponding ECO-codes for the book openings

2.4 The various configuration files.

The fundamental choice is made NOT to save any changed settings of the chess program. This means in practice that if you start REBEL the program automatically plays with the strongest settings. An exception is made for the time level. This information is saved in the REBEL.BGN file.

The REBEL.CFG contains all settings that can be changed including name (and path) of the current opening books, database, piece set, PGN-directory, EPD-directory, and IECG-directory, colors, layout and the configuration of the display of games of the database and so on.
