To view the next games in the database, you have two possibilities:
Keyboard users use F1.
You now can load another database. The fastest way to do this is using the shortcut ALT+D (or defined button) or by simply clicking on the displayed name of the database.
If you have loaded another database, you will be asked upon leaving the Program if all changes should be saved. If you confirm with yes, REBEL will load this database at the beginning of your next session.
With this option you can create your own desired database. An example would be collecting (your own) games played at your chess club.
The database will be searched for double games. Double games are deleted without further notice and will be written to the database TRASH.DAT for reasons of security.
Activating reorganization will force the program to sort the entire database by name. Additionally, all deleted games will be permanently removed from the database, thus increasing your free disk space.
Reorganization is only useful if you have added or deleted games.
Before starting the reorganization, REBEL will first inform you whether it makes sense to reorganize by displaying how many bytes of free disk space will be gained.
There are other advantages in reorganizing: some search functions will be performed quicker, and searching on moves, positions or text will show the games alphabetically.
Depending on the size of the database, the reorganization will take some time. When reorganizing, a temporary (and invisible) file will be created. If your harddisk contains insufficient space, reorganizing is impossible.
The IX4-index file of the database is the free index file. An index will shorten the searching through big databases immensely. If you use this feature in a clever way, you can find the games you're seeking in a a twinkling of an eye. "Reorganize IX4" gives you the possibility to reorganize the database while automatically adding a free index item. In this option REBEL gives you the opportunity to choose between various common search items or a text you choose yourself. After you've made this choice you will be prompted by the question whether existing free index data should be overwritten or not.
Every time a game is deleted a copy will be made in the trash.dat file. When this option deactivated, this will NOT be done and much time will be saved, especially when you delete many games at one time.
All games that have been deleted before and have been saved for security into TRASH.DAT will now be DEFINITELY deleted. These games will now be gone forever!
REBEL will count the total number of games in the database. This number will also be visible afterwards in the menu.
This will take you back to the game with board etc.
Keyboard users use F2.
This menu offers you possibilities to search your current database for almost every item that a game can be searched for.
Upon entering this choice your screen will change into a form where you can mark several selection possibilities. Press on the "SEARCH" button after you have defined you search items and the database will be searched for games that meet your specifications.
First of all you'll have three vertical rows of blocks that can be switched on/off. You can only have one of those three activated per line. Meaning of the symbols above the rows:
" || " means (when activated): if this item is found in a game, the game will be selected unless other conditions forbid; " && " means (when activated): this item MUST be present in the game otherwise it will not be selected at all; " != " means (when activated): this item is NOT allowed to be present.
Examples:
Secondly you'll have many items to be specified a bit more such as
-white name-, -black name-, -free classification-, -notes-,
-tournament- and -place-. You can give a text here that will be
searched for in the database.
Other items like -date-, -Elo white-, -Elo black- and -Eco- can be
specified in a range. For instance: Elo white =1600 ´2000 will
make REBEL search for every game in which the white player has an ELO
rating higher than 1599 but lower than 2001. When you set the
"!=" block it will result in the selection of games of white
players that has an ELO rating lower than 1600 or higher than 2000.
Thirdly you'll see four small boards corresponding with -moves (board 1)-, -position (board 2)-, -pattern (board 3)- and -material (board 4)- search items. What kind of position, pattern etc. the database will be searched for can be defined in the Start menu (see section Set up position for and Current game to). You can change the position to be searched for with the option of the Start menu, or also by clicking on the corresponding board. This also applies to pattern and material but not to moves. Keyboard users can use <CTRL>+<F2>, <CTRL>+<F3> and <CTRL>+<F4>,
Search on moves: the program will search for games containing the exact moves of the currently played game on the chessboard. This can be very useful for opening preparation.
Another 2 examples:
Example (1)
will result in all games of the current database of the year 1998 in which Kasparov had white or Karpov had black
Example (2)
will result in all games of the current database which Kasparov played against players with an ELO-rating lower than 2500 in a Linares tournament in all months of the year except May and June and where he didn't win. This example is rather odd, especially for the month item, but it clearly shows that the possibilities are almost infinite.
You can input either one or two names here, both of which will be searched for in the database. If you have typed just one name with white, the program will search for all the games by that player, starting with the games he or she played with white. If you type only one name with black, REBEL will start searching first for the games he or she played with black. If you have typed two names, the program will search for all the games played between those two players. This function works via the famous BTREE+ principle and will select games from a database of 1,000,000 games within seconds.
You will be prompted to define the ECO range for which the database is to be searched. Because this option will make use of the index, searching via this option will probably be faster than via search mask.
You will be prompted to define the text of the free index for which the Database is to be searched. Because this option will make use of the index, searching via this option will probably be faster than via search mask.
All games of the database that are won by white will be displayed.
All games of the database that ended in a draw will be displayed.
All games of the database that are won by black will be displayed.
All games of the database that do not contain a score will be displayed.
This will clear all former search entries and now the contents of the database will now be displayed alphabetically ordered by white name.
This will clear all former search entries and now the contents of the database will now be displayed alphabetically ordered by black name.
This will clear all former search entries and now the contents of the database will now be displayed alphabetically ordered by eco code.
This will clear all former search entries and now the contents of the database will now be displayed alphabetically ordered by free index text.
Keyboard users use F3.
With the submenu you can declare how many characters of the white name you want to be displayed.
With the submenu you can declare how many characters of the black name you want to be displayed.
When activated every game that is displayed will have a number. This number is a temporary number and is not saved anywhere. When you make another selection every displayed game will receive a new number. The possibility to give games a temporary number is only done for your convenience and has no meaning for the game.
This will show the score of a game.
This will show the date of a game.
With the submenu you can declare how many characters of the place name you want to be displayed.
With the submenu you can declare how many characters of the tournament name you want to be displayed.
This will show the ECO code of the opening of the game.
With the submenu you can declare how many characters of the free index you want to be displayed.
This will show the total number of moves of a game.
Activating this will fill the remaining space of the gameline with the first moves in the short notation form.
Two small boards of the game where the selection cursor (>> <<) is on will be displayed: one with the end position of the opening's theory and one with the position at the end of the game.
This gives you the possibility to decide how long REBEL will calculate on a position of a small board. This applies for the "evaluate"-function in the database overview and database game overview as well as for the boards in the "game overview" option of menu "Extra".
With a small font 40 games will be display instead of the regular 20.
With this option activated, the selection of games that you have made will stay valid every time when you enter into the database until you activate "Cancel selec." (8.1) or load another database.
This will save the current screen settings into the REBEL.DCF except for the colors. The next time you start REBEL, the program will remember the changes you made. See also section The various configuration files.
You can load another configuration of the screen. The screen will now be classified according to this file.
The screen now is configured according to the standard settings in the program itself, except for the colors.
Keyboard users use F4.
There are six different overviews available. The contents of these overviews can be written to a text file by clicking on the TXT button in the info section (ALT+T for keyboard users).
You will get a complete overview of all players in the database and their results. All games played, with regard to their results, will be taken into consideration and will lead to a new ELO rating of a given player in the database. The meaning of the three ELO ratings is as follows:
Original original ELO rating of a player Average average ELO rating of the opponents the player has played against New the new calculated ELO rating for this player
You will get a complete overview of all openings in the database and their results. Concerning displayed ELO-ratings: same as 8.5.1.
You will get a complete overview of all free indexes of the database and their results. Concerning displayed ELO-ratings: same as 8.5.1.
You will get an overview of the best 40 players in the database, based on the results of the games. The 40 players with the highest percentage will be displayed.
With PG-UP / PG-DWN you can switch between the two pages.

You will be prompted to input two player names.
The program will gather all the games both players have played and will show the results. The games between those two players are also taken into consideration and the final result will be displayed.
This function is very useful if you want to know the results of matches played between two players.
This function is useful:
You will be prompted to make the desired selections to search for in the database. The output is based on the generally recognized names of the played book openings. You can only select one name, white or black, and the program will search for the desired player and color.
Keyboard users use F5.
The selected games will be added to a new, which you will be prompted for.
The selected games will be added to an existing database, which you will be prompted for.
See section Analyze selection on analyzing.
The selected games will be written to new file of PGN-format including all the comments, while your REBEL database will stay unchanged of course. You will be prompted to type the name of the new PGN-file. You have to take care for yourself that there is enough free space on your harddisk!
The conversion can be interrupted by pressing <ESC>.

First you will be asked to select the PGN file that you want to add and then it will be added to the current REBEL database.
You will be prompted for permission to avoid unwillingly adding games to your database.
ALL positions (meaning no games!) from the database are written to an EPD file.
The selected EPD-file is completely imported in the database. This is the ultimate comfort in exchanging positions with other chess programs.
You now can load another PGN-database. You can also click on the displayed name of the PGN-database when you're viewing the PGN-games.
See section Enter PGN-database.
