The Rebel9 opening book is currently under development by
Jeroen Noomen and further improved with the latest new theory.
Jeroen started his work for Rebel in 1990 at first for the dedicated versions of Rebel such as the Mephisto Polgar, the Mephisto Risc, the Chess Machine series and later for Rebel on the PC starting with Mephisto Gideon followed by Rebel 6.0 and so on. Below you will find an overview of Jeroen's contributions (till now) meant for the successor of Rebel9. In the meantime Jeroen will continue his work on the Rebel book and further new theory is added which contents will be added to this page when available.
Improvements on the Rebel 9 openingbook
1. Four Knight's 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. g3!?
Glek-variation for White, 4. d4 has been improved considerably.
2. Scotch 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 strongly improved.
3. Vienna game for White 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 and now
3. Bc4, 3. f4 or 3. g3
4. Latvian gambit 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 f5!? as a new weapon for
Black. Considered dubious by theory, but very dangerous against
unprepaired opponents.
5. Belgrade gambit 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. d4 exd4
5. Nd5!? Karpov writes this gambit is far more dangerous than
its reputation. White often gets great compensation for the pawn.
6. Ruy Lopez 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. 0-0 Bc5!?
and 5 ... b5 6. Bb3 Bc5!? for Black. The Moller and Neo-Archangelsk
variations are very popular today. Two of the most developing lines
in the Ruy Lopez, by the efforts of f.e. Shirov, Anand, Karpov and
Topalov.
7. Queen's Indian 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 b6 greatly improved.
New lines for White and Black.
8. Queen's gambit, Chigorin defence 1. d4 d5 2. c4 Nc6. Often
leading to non-balanced positions, giving good play for Black.
Thanks to the efforts of Morozevich and Ivanchuk this line is
becoming more and more popular.
9. Evans-gambit 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. b4!? as a new
weapon for White. THE gambit of the last century, together with
the King's gambit! A lot of theory of the old masters, like Lasker,
Chigorin, Steinitz and others.
10. Scandinavian 1. e4 d5 With a lot of improvements for White
and Black.
11. Queen's gambit, Lasker and Tartakower variations improved.
1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 Be7 5. e3 0-0 6. Nf3 h6
7. Bh4 b6 and 7. ... Ne4
12. Queen's gambit, exchange variation 3. cxd5 or 4. cxd5.
Improvements for both White and Black.
13. Queen's gambit with Bf4! 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nf3
Be7 5. Bf4! The modern variation versus the QGD, popularized
by f.e. Kramnik, Karpov, Topalov, Van Wely and others. Rebel
knows all about this line!
14. Semi-Tarrasch 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nf3 c5 a new
variation for Black, added to the book.
15. Ruy Lopez exchange 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Bxc6
Now more options for Rebel as Black.
16. Sicilian Najdorf, Fischer's variation added to Rebel's
repertoire: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3
a6 6. Bc4
17. Reti 1. Nf3 greatly improved, may new variations for White
and Black.
18. English 1. c4 all variations extended and strongly improved.
Rebel has about 15 new variations versus the English defence
in store!
19. Sicilian, the 'new' Alapin, popularized by Adams, Anand and
others: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. c3!? the new fashion for White!?
Rebel knows it and plays this with White!
20. French exchange variation. 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 exd5
and now 4. Bd3 or 4. c4!? Really that boring!? We don't think
so. Otherwise Kasparov would not play it as White!
21. Larsen's opening 1. b3 as a new variation for White.
22. A lot of dubious variations are difficult to handle. With the
help of the Big book of Busts these variations are now refuted.
Don't try it against Rebel, because you'll lose!
23. Last but not least all major improvements and novelties from
the last year have been added to Rebel's chess opening knowledge.
